In the vedio " A Vison Of Students Today" I belive that some of this is true. I have noticed a lot of things moving from a smaller community college to a big university. One of the things they pointed out was that only 18% of teachers know their students. Going form a small college to a big one was a very hard change for me. For my whole first year here at south I was kinda pushed around and no one really took the time to get to know me. I had one teacher take time to learn all of her students. She got to know me so well that when I was late for my final she got worried because she knew that was not like me to be late or to miss a very big test. It flet so nice to know that one out of 5 of my professors got to know me on that level. I think if alot more professores did that learning would be so much better.
Another big thing they pointed put is that older ways of teaching are becoming obsolite. More and more students are connected by technology that old ways fo teaching like the chalkboard are no longer used. It makes it hard for students to focus when it is not interesting for us to learn. not only are old ways becoming cbsolite more students soend more time on the computer a week thatn they do anything ealse thanks to social networks. More and more things are being done through technology in the classroom.
In the reading It’s Not about the Technology the author has a really great point. Every year we spend thousand of dollars to teach teacher technology that they don't even use. They could be doing so much with the new technology that they are given information for. They are given this information to make learning easier for the children. I think if more teachers were to use more technology to teach with children would learn so much more in the classroom because there would be so much more interesting stuff to go over.
As teachers we should be open to learning just like we asked our kids to. There are new ways to help our students learn things better through technology. I agree that there is such a huge age range between teachers today and teachers from ten years ago. My mom has been an educator for more than thirty years. She has to go to smart board workshops every summer to keep up with the times. Even though she is a PE teacher she still has to know what the other teachers do. If we do not keep up with this new technology it will kill our chance of reaching children in a more effective ways.
In the Blog Is It Okay To Be A Technologically Illiterate Teacher? One thing stuck out very clear in my mind. When Mr. Fisch said that when he would have a parent teacher conference and the parent would say " I was never good at that when I was in school." I know for a fact my parents have said that phrase more than once. It is true that it relates a lot to teachers that refuse to learn technology. If you look at the situation it relates to teachers from 30 years ago that refuse to learn new things. Stay on top of your game, and being able to learn new things.
I agree that all principals and head teachers should be held accountable for their staff not knowing this stuff. They are the leaders and it is sad to say but I bet many of them don't know any of the new technology either. This class has made me look in a short amount of time of how much I do not know. I am thankful to have a teacher that is making me strive for better and to learn more so I can do more with my students. Teachers who do not use this information should losses their jobs for not helps us learn the things to we need to teach our kids. I also agree that we should stop being nice and we should start calling teachers out when they don't uses this information or they choose not to use it.
In the last Watch the Social Media Count change every second when you click on this sentence. Seeing this made me think of how many times a day I check my email and facebook. It is amazing to see how many people make a facebook or some social network. The world is exploding around us and it is a train we are going to have to jump on and join in. This is going to change the way we teach and they way we communicate with our students and other colleagues. This stuff is going to change our world as teachers and the way we are doing things.

ReplyDeleteI like your blog and I have watched your video and read all you blog assignments and think we have a lot of the same thoughts. I agree with you that it is hard coming from a community college to a university. I also agree that it is sad that most teachers and even students don’t know the name of their students or in a student case their professor. You also bring up a very good point about how the old teaching style is becoming obsolete. Technology needs to be taken advantage of as much as possible. Teachers need to use the skills they learn to make learning better processes. I also had the same reaction as I sat there and watch the numbers move up and I really thought about how many times a day I checked my email and facebook. Thanks for sharing you thoughts and good luck.
